Signs you need a repair

A struggling appliance tells you before it quits. Watch for a fridge that runs warm, a washer that will not spin out, an oven that heats unevenly, or an air conditioner blowing warm air. Rising power bills with no change in usage often point to a worn part working harder than it should.

Unusual noises, burning smells, or a tripped breaker that resets on the same appliance are reasons to stop using it and call a technician. Those symptoms can signal an electrical fault that is unsafe to keep running.

Repair or replace

The plain rule most technicians use: if a repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the appliance is past its typical service life, replacement usually wins. Under that line, repair is the cheaper and greener choice.

Typical service life

Refrigerators run 10 to 15 years, washers and dryers around 10, dishwashers about 9, and split-system air conditioners 10 to 15 with regular servicing. An eight-year-old washer with a failed bearing is a judgement call; a two-year-old one is almost always worth fixing.

What a service call covers

A standard visit starts with a diagnosis, then a quote before any work begins. You approve the price, the technician fits the part, tests the unit, and cleans up. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair and what warranty covers the parts fitted.

  • Fault diagnosis and a written quote
  • Replacement parts and labour
  • A function test before the technician leaves
  • Warranty terms on parts and workmanship

Booking a technician

Have the brand, model number, and a short description of the fault ready when you call. That lets the technician bring the likely parts on the first visit and cuts return trips. Photos of the model plate and any error code help too.
